Welcome to Herugrim, Inc. In Old English, "herugrim" means "fierce in war". Likewise it was used by J.R.R. Tolkien as the name of King Theoden's sword. But for your purposes Herugrim, Inc. is an all purpose blacksmith's shop. The primary work done at this forge is producing accurate examples of historical arms and armor, tools, and architectural hardware. More specifically, I tend to focus on medieval helmets, cutting tools (such as swords, knives, axes, and chisles), hinges, locks, and of course, nails. Most of the hardware I produce is for 18th century homes and buildings.

In regards to the processes, I strive to use the same techniques and materials as early tradesmen did. Therefore I primarily use pure iron, and simple medium or high carbon steels for most work. I also do laminated, pattern welded, and blister steel. Of course using historical methods does not mean ignoring modern metallurgical science, and the processes involved. So while using techniques like raising to make a helmet (as opposed to gas welding two halves), I would use more precise (modern) methods of heat treatment on edged tools for more consistancy.

I have also found it beneficial to be able to provide other services for my clients, such as sand and lost wax casting of non-ferrous metals (for buckles, lock parts, etc.), leatherwork (turnshoes, belts, sheaths, etc.), and the sewing of fabrics (linen gambesons, coifs, etc.). Likewise I provide repair and restoration services to antique ironwork.

Since I generally do not do production work, I do not have a catalog. All work then is customized to your needs. For estimates please feel free to contact me. I require a 10% non-refundable deposit before work begins and the balance upon completion of the order. Often I make things that strike my fancy so I usually have a helmet or knife or two that needs a home.
